I have a friend. He was a smoker, a heavy smoker. He smoked more than 2 packs of cigarettes a day. My friend started smoking when he was 15. Now, he is 24. As I know he liked smoking very much, and actually he didn’t think about stopping smoke. My friend stopped smoking just 3 years ago, when he was 21. So he smoked about 6 years! All people know that smoking cigarettes is very harmful for our health. Cigarette also is a kind of drugs. So it’s very difficult to stop smoking. But my friend could do it! Of cause he tried to stop smoking and failed it many times. However when I see him I feel how many efforts he needed, and how he should have a firm resolve. I feel also that my friend was a spiteful person, and how people should be spiteful to success the difficult decision.
The first time when he tried to stop smoking is 8 years ago. He was just 16. I and the other friends told him about harmful side of cigarettes. But ‘a heavy smoker’ didn’t listen to us. Not much later, he was caught by his parents, and after that he didn’t smoke for a while. At first my friend told us that he absolutely stopped smoking. However, finally I and the other friends found ‘a heavy smoker’ with cigarettes in the school’s toilet.
The second time when he tried to stop it is in 2005. I don’t know yet why he wanted to stop smoking, and what the reason was. In this time ‘a heavy smoker’ stopped smoking more than 10 month. It was the longest period when he didn’t smoke. But one day he just told me that he began smoking again, and he had a very sad face, so I didn’t ask any questions about it.
After that my friend tried many times, but he failed it. He stopped smoking in 2008. At that time I came back to Korea, so I just heard about how he could stop smoking. Firstly the reason was the woman. He fell in love. But the woman doesn’t like a smoker, so he decided to stop smoking. ‘A heavy smoker’ tried with firm resolve, and finally he did it!
Later I spoke with him and my friend told me it was the stressful time for him. He also said he didn’t know that stopping smoke is very hard. It needed a difficult decision, and people should be spiteful to stop smoking. But my friend added ‘stop smoking’ is an incorrect word. People can’t stop smoking if they began to do it. They only could suppress the desire of smoking until their death. I understood his word that how stopping smoke is difficult. I can learn from my friend that if we keep at our goals with the patience and the strong mind, we can success any goals; even it will be hard and difficult.
